Creating a Skype Account


  • This article assumes Skype is already installed on the computer. If Skype is not installed, you can download it from http://www.skype.com

  • Open Skype by clicking on Start Menu -> All Programs -> Skype -> Skype

  • When the Skype window opens, click on the link that says Create a new account
  • This will open up a web browser to the Skype registration page

  • You have to fill in the following fields...
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Email Address
  • Country
  • Language
  • Then you pick your Skype name. This is a unique name similar to an email address or Instant Messenger name. You may have to get creative or add numbers on the end of your name to get one that has not already been taken.
  • Type in a password. Choose one you will remember. If you forget your password, it's important that you put in a correct email address above. This will allow you to reset your password if you forget.
  • Type in the captcha words
  • Click the green button that says I agree - Continue

  • If your registration was successful, you will see a page with a welcome message. If it was not successful, the field with an error will be highlighted in red.
  • If it was successful, go ahead and click logout in the upper-right corner.


Logging into Skype

  • Open Skype by clicking on Start Menu -> All Programs -> Skype -> Skype

  • Type in your username and password.
  • Then click Sign me in

  • If you are signing in for the first time, Skype might ask you if you want to take your picture to add to your profile. You can either click Take your picture or click on the X in the upper-right corner to close that screen. You can also check the box that says Don't show this again to prevent this window from popping up in the future.


Adding a Contact

  • Your Contacts are listed on the left-hand portion of the screen. This is a list of other Skype users who you are friends with.
  • To add a contact, click on the Add a Contact button located at the bottom of your Contacts

  • On the Add a Contact screen, there are four different fields you can use to find another Skype user. They are...
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Full Name
  • Skype Name
  • Use as many of these fields as you like to help find the person. If you type in a Skype Name, you might have to hit tab afterwards, for it to process correctly.
  • Once you enter in the information and it finds a match, the green Add button will light up. You can now click on this button to proceed.

  • A default message will appear. You can edit this message if you like.
  • Click Send Request to send the message to the other Skype user, asking them to be your friend.

  • You will get confirmation that the request was sent.
  • Click the X in the upper-right corner to close this screen.


Accepting a Contact Request

  • When another Skype user sends you a Contact Request, it will appear above your Contacts list.
  • When the Contact Request button appears, go ahead and click on it to answer the request.

  • You have several choices to answer the request. You can add the user to your contacts, view their profile to learn more about them, ignore the request, or block the user from communicating with you.
  • If you want to add them to your Contacts, click Add to Contacts

  • Once you click Add to Contacts, the user will now show up in your Contacts list. They get added to the top.


Initiating a Skype Call

  • To call someone on Skype, click their name in your Contacts list.
  • On the right-hand side, click the green Call button.

  • The right-hand side of the screen changes, displaying the status of the call. The Skype user you are calling will get a notification of an incoming call.


Answering a Skype Call

  • When you receive an incoming call, you will get a pop-up window notifying you who is calling. You will have the option to Answer or Decline the call.
  • If you want to talk to the user, click Answer

  • Upon answering the call, the screen will change to show either a picture of that person (if they took a picture of themselves) or video of the person (if they have a web cam turned on.)
  • When you are done with the call, click on the red Phone icon, located on the Options bar to hang-up the call.


Checking your Audio Settings (Microphone and Speakers)

  • If you have trouble hearing the other Skype user or they have trouble hearing you, check your Audio Settings.
  • To check your Audio Settings, click on the Tools menu and then click on Options

  • Click on the Audio Settings option on the left-hand side
  • You will now see your Microphone and Speaker settings.
  • For the laptops in the PCC lab, you should have the following settings...
  • Microphone: Microphone (Webcam Pro 9000)
  • Automatically adjust microphone settings checked
  • Speakers: Speakers/Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio)
  • Automatically adjust speaker settings checked


Turning the web cam on and off


  • If the person you are talking to cannot see a video of you, do the following...
  • Make sure your web cam is plugged into the computer
  • On the Options Bar of the call, there is an icon that looks like a camera. You can click on this icon to toggle the camera on and off. When it is off, there is a red line going through it.
