Connecting Remotely to your Server Home Folder with Windows XP

  • Click the Start Button
  • From the Start Menu, click on Computer
  • In the new window that opened, click Map Network Drive

  • Click the hyperlink titled Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures.

  • Click Next

  • Select Choose a custom network location
  • Click Next

  • Enter in the address of the FTP Server. If you don't know the address of your FTP Server, please email helpdesk@new.org or call 734-998-0160 x513.
  • Click Next

  • Un-check the Log on anonymously option
  • In the user name field, type in your server username. If you don't know your server username, please email helpdesk@new.org or call 734-998-0160 x513.
  • Click Next

  • Type in a name for this connection. This will be what you see when selecting this location in open/save dialog boxes within applications on your home computer.
  • Click Next

  • When you first open this connection, you will be prompted for your server password. Enter it and click Log On.

  • A window will open displaying the contents of your server home folder. You will also see an icon for it with the name you gave it, under Computer on the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer. This icon can be seen from open/save dialog boxes with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other applications when saving or opening files.

  • Now that you have added the network place shortcut to your server home folder, you can go to my double-clicking on My Network Places from your Windows XP desktop.

  • Then double-click on the icon with the name you gave the connection earlier.

  • Here is an example of how to open/save files in your Server Home Folder from an application on your computer.
  • After clicking Open or Save, click the drop-down menu at the top and choose My Network Places.
